Change of universe, from transport to market gardening<\/h3>\n

Rafal Krupa was born in Poland, where he trained and worked as a truck and bus driver, crisscrossing his country and throughout central Europe. Nine years ago, his sister, then working for us, invited him to join her. He started as a seasonal worker in the eggplant greenhouse, took an interest in the job, learned quickly, and a few years later, was appointed manager.<\/p>\n

"At first, it all seemed like magic," he recalls with a laugh, as he discusses his first steps in eggplant cultivation. But he quickly learned the techniques. Today, he's the one who prepares the nutrient mixes according to the cultivation manager's instructions and who carefully monitors the condition of the plants and fruit. "When you pick up the eggplant, you know right away if it's good or not," he explains. He passes this expertise on to his team, ensuring that his work can be carried out in their absence.<\/p>\n

The four seasons in the eggplant greenhouse<\/h3>\n

Planting takes place in winter and harvesting begins as early as March. This early start results in robust plants and abundant harvests in summer, which continue until October. At Stoll, we produce around 400 tons of eggplant per year to meet the growing demand for this fruity vegetable. Its consumption has increased significantly in Switzerland in recent years, driven by the rise of Mediterranean cuisine and the availability of these locally grown products.<\/p>\n

By late summer, the plants reach up to six meters tall, almost touching the greenhouse roof. Rafal and his team therefore spend much of their time up high, often in intense heat. The day systematically begins with picking, followed by plant care: training to guide their growth and pruning to retain only the most productive branches.<\/p>\n

Between demanding work and moments of escape<\/h3>\n

Although his job is seasonal, Rafal plays a key role throughout the eggplant cycle. Leading his team for ten months in Switzerland, he oversees production and the organization of work within the greenhouse. In November and December, he returns to Poland to be with his family, before returning each year for a new season.<\/p>\n

A great lover of travel and long drives, he enjoys taking weekend getaways, often impromptu, depending on the mood of the moment. He appreciates Switzerland's central location in Europe, which allows him to quickly reach France and Italy, among his favorite destinations. One or two colleagues usually travel with him, transforming these getaways into moments of conviviality.<\/p>\n

With his career path, Rafal perfectly illustrates how rigor, a desire to progress, and commitment to others can pave the way for increased responsibilities.
