A first in the canton of Vaud: a geothermal project to heat greenhouses

During the winter of 2022-2023, in Montagny-sur-Yverdon, we drilled a well targeting the Middle Malm aquifer, renowned for its rich supply of hot water. Our goal: to access water at 45°C to heat our greenhouses with renewable thermal energy.
Stoll Geothermal Project

Our MalmEnergie Naturelle project officially launched in 2018 with the creation of the company of the same name. As the first Vaud-based company to commit to medium-depth geothermal energy, we have invested more than 12 million Swiss francs to make this ambition a reality.

The project took place from November 2022 to February 2023. It involved around fifty companies, required around 70 trucks of equipment and saw teams work in 8-hour shifts, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The well reached a depth of 1,200 meters.

Unfortunately, this drilling did not produce the expected results. While the temperature achieved was in line with expectations, the water flow rate proved insufficient to meet our needs.

However, previous studies are encouraging: suitable areas exist in this aquifer. Still determined, we are already thinking about a new geothermal research project.

This initiative, for which we will receive federal grants for a portion of our investment, has also enriched our geological knowledge of the region. The data collected will be made available to the public.
